What are Coronaviruses?

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause respiratory syndromes that can range from a mild condition (common cold) to more serious illnesses; These viruses are one of those that cause zoonoses.

Sometimes the coronaviruses that infect animals evolve, and become capable of transmitting to people and from person to person, becoming a new strain of coronavirus capable of causing disease in humans, as happened with the Syndrome Severe Acute Respiratory (SARS), in 2003 and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV), in 2012.

Types of Coronavirus

Coronaviruses get their name from the shape of the spikes on their surface. There are four main coronavirus subgroups, known as alpha, beta, gamma, and delta.

Human coronaviruses were first identified in the mid-1960s, and the seven types of coronaviruses that regularly circulate among people are:

  • 229E (coronavirus alpha)

  • NL63 (coronavirus alpha)

  • OC43 (beta coronavirus)

  • HKU1 (beta coronavirus)

Other human coronaviruses are:

  • MERS-CoV -Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (beta coronavirus)

  • SARS -Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (beta coronavirus)

  • New coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19)

People around the world are commonly infected with human coronavirus 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1.

COVID-19 transmission mechanism

As with other respiratory viruses such as influenza, the route of transmission for COVID-19 is by air, through the droplets of saliva expelled by coughing or sneezing by a sick person.

Transmission way:

  • Drops:

Dissemination by drops of more than 5 microns produced from the source person (eg, speaking, coughing) and which comes into contact with the nasal, oral or conjunctive mucosa of a susceptible host.
The drops reach up to one meter when speaking and four meters when coughing or sneezing.

  • Aerosol sprays:

Dissemination in aerosols less than 5 microns in diameter.
Procedures such as sampling, endotracheal intubation, non-invasive ventilation, tracheostomy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, manual ventilation before intubation, and bronchoscopy.

  • Contact:

Direct contact with the patient or indirect contact with contaminated surfaces.
